As unconventional as the title of this article may seem, it's true to the depths of which many of us have never uncovered. One may ask, "How can my fear of snakes or heights, lead me to what I want?" That's a funny way of looking at it but I wish to go deeper into the fears that make our emotions quake and cause us to question our very own inhibitions and effectiveness. If I were to put it lightly, fear of snakes, heights and what ever else gives us goose bumps, are trivial and recovered by the mare switch of thought and direction.
In going further, I hope to address the kind of fear that shifts the ground under our feet, to the point where we don't desire to run but to freeze time and 'figure it all out'. The type of fear that nags your mind to dwell on certain thoughts, not because they're not pleasant but because there's an internal battle going on - one between reality and what the outcome might be. The fears that in your current human sight, possibilities and scope; will change the spheres of your life's orbit. Deep isn't it? Trust me, I can relate. As a lover of literature and a greater lover of God, I wish to recount a passage of scripture that most Ministers share from the surface, under the premise of just Peter, the waves and Jesus.
In Matthew 14: 22 - 33, we observe the Disciples under the instruction of their leader, soon to be Savior with the zeal to experience and to do His mighty works. We understand in that same scenario the Disciples were on the sea, crossing over to another place "...the other side" while Jesus sent the multitudes away and went apart from them to pray. Thereafter, several things happened; a storm arose, they became weary, confronted by what they thought was a spirit at the fourth watch, and a great fear came upon the Disciples, and so, they cried out. It is at that time, Jesus revealed himself and Peter's willingness to walk on the water ensued.
Keeping in mind the things I just pointed out, many of us are faced with that kind of fear. It's a place of such intensified abnormality, our awareness of being alone is most apparent and our quickest question is always, "Where is God in all of this? I need an answer". Let me remove the biggest scale from our eyes. If you're failing to always be in tuned with operations of the spiritual cosmos, you'll never realize when God is taking you over to the other side, to another dimension and where you ought to be. Our desire to find the answer, lies in our constant communications with God, heightening our awareness of when He's showing up and taking us to a new place. Note when the Disciples' fears were intensified; when everything seemed out of their control and they were confronted by the unknown (what they thought to be a spirit). The next scale to be removed is... The unknown is seen as such, if we only think inside of a box and also place God in one. If the Disciples were focused on being spirit centered on their journey to the other side, they would have realized that God does not operate by their expectations but their trust and faith and most of all, His plan.
As human beings, more so Christians, we do the very same thing. We expect the normal from God, but how could we? The normal doesn't bring fear on us, the abnormal does. Therefore, don't expect the supernatural move of God to be normal. The supernatural, produces supernatural results; things that our mind or society will see as something real, only designed and encrypted by God.
In the midst of our fear, are we trusting God or, are we doubting God? Just like Peter, who knew that he wanted to meet with Jesus on the water, he doubted his ability to do it. His reality of sinking became more real and instead of trusting God in making his steps, he got distracted by the elements around him. Though we are are fearful, we know what we want but we allow the distractions of public opinion, failing and "not having it all figured out", cripple us.
This passage of scripture was recorded in the Bible to teach us several things; the importance of our intimacy with God, our Faith, the origin of our fears and more so, recognizing when God is shifting us into a new place.
Are we going to be wavered by the elements or will we trust the direction in which God is leading us?
