It's what you don't know, can hurt you.

We usually hear the saying, "Knowledge is power" and we think that it's so profound but the reality is; knowing some thing is of no use, if we choose not to apply it to our everyday lives. The case of ignorance in the area in which I'm about to write, is inexcusable for adults who should be self aware and thriving to improve. However, you're going to learn something new today! Those are the words of a dear friend.

I understand that in formative years, parents may fail to teach children some things. Whether the reason is for lack of knowledge themselves or choosing to neglect to pass on the information regarding practicing good hygiene but when one becomes an adult, one is responsible for oneself. Now, I know that we all know about soap and water, showering twice daily and applying the essential deodorant and fragrance there after but is that all there is to smelling good? There is a sense that we were all born with that very few people lack; it's the sense of smell. I'll be blunt, every person is capable of smelling themselves, be it their breath or where ever else and so the correct course of action is rectifying the problem because believe it or not, God did not create us to be stink. If you're of the belief that having an odor expresses your individuality then I think you ought to be put into the fringes because you're adding to the destruction of the precious O-zone layer and giving the people around you bad experiences.

For the men and women who are interested in improving the feel and smell of your body, keep reading. I'll start with the basic knowledge of what is taught to be done in the shower. Other than knowing that having a shower twice daily, we also are aware that soap and water are our friends and rightly so but the kind of soap and water is key. Everyone has a preference of liking soaps or preferring shower gels. Some men enjoy the 2in1 shower washes that works as a shampoo and body wash and a lot of women enjoy using body washes because the feel is just luxurious. Unfortunately, the five hour pay off of body washes isn't as luxurious unless we do a few things before.

Here are some shower essentials for both men and women, that are guaranteed to freshen you up the right way and leave you smelling great for a very long time. (i) An antibacterial or hygiene soap. It's important to provide the skin with a deep cleaning soap so that it can fight the bad bacteria that fights us with odor. During baths, we should at least soap our bodies twice, preferably three times. (ii) A good exfoliating shower cloth. Loofahs don't work! Proper exfoliation of the skin, removes dead skin that holds on to odor causing bacteria, hence; revealing newer, radiant skin. Be sure to pay extra attention to the armpits, back, buttocks and feet. (iii) In the case of men, a mild soap (Original Dove or Ivory) to wash the genital area and for women; a feminine wash. Cleansing your penis or vagina with regular soap can throw off your body's normal PH balance causing irritations or infections resulting in a very unfriendly odor. Be sure to also use an exfoliating cloth in the groin area because sweat and odor can also build up there. Women believe that the vagina is self cleaning. Guess what, the Vaginal canal is, not the Labia minora and majora, it's important to clean around your folds. Get friendly with Summer's Eve, Vagasil or Fds  feminine washes, whatever floats your boat and works with your body. Please try to disassociate your vagina from smelling like a cat or a fish; we don't need to earn that name.  (iv) Finish your bath with your body wash of choice. The purpose of body wash isn't to clean the skin but rather, to add moisture and infuse a fragrance into the skin but never use it under the arms and genital area.

As most people would share the opinion that bad breath is a turn off, taking care of the issue isn't a very difficult, if they have a good relationship with their dentist. We all know that it's good practice to brush our teeth after every meal but brushing only will not take care of bad breath if it's beyond the surface. For some, it can be a bacterial issue in the gums, a bad tooth or the worst, an internal issue but all can be dealt with. Besides brushing, using a toothpaste containing baking soda is essential for healthy gums and whitening teeth but we must never forget to floss at least three times a week because there will be places that our toothbrush can not reach. A mouth rinse is also a vital part of hygiene especially gargling, which brings me to the extreme internal issue of bad breath. Bad breath can be caused by poor digestion that results in a gastric reflux and such a problem requires a doctor. However, let's not forget that an individual with bad breath knows that their breath is kicking. It's the closest thing to their nose.
Added to these things, there are items that keep us fresh and smelling good through out the day. Though toilet paper serves it's purpose, we're not always left feeling clean so purchasing flushable wipes and using them after we use toilet paper, is like a mini shower in between showers. There are also occasions, especially in women, around the time of the menstrual cycle that her perspiration can become a very strong odor. Using lime juice or vinegar under the arm pits before a shower around that that time will definitely eradicate the problem and it works wonders in both men and women. I've also mentioned in previous articles the importance of shaving our private parts. Not only does it offer a better sexual experience, it's an important part of smelling good. In case some of you don't know, hair carries and traps odor and is the breeding ground for bacteria. Razors and shaving creams should be the friends of all human beings and our underwear should always be cotton and changed every time we shower.

The issue of hygiene is an universal one and we carry the responsibility of giving ourselves the attention to look and smell good. We don't take these efforts for other people, we ought to do it to love the skin we're in and self improvement.
